A long-handled wooden spoon can stir preserves, sauces, chutneys, and pickling mixtures while keeping hands farther from hot food. Use it only when clean, intact, and suitable for food preparation.

What to look for

  • A smooth, solid utensil without cracks, splinters, loose joints, or peeling coatings
  • A handle long enough for the selected pot
  • A broad end suitable for scraping the pan base without damaging it
  • A utensil reserved for food, not crafts or non-food use

Cleaning and replacement

Wash promptly according to the manufacturer’s directions and allow the spoon to dry completely. Replace it if it becomes cracked, deeply scored, moldy, or impossible to clean. Do not use a utensil that has contacted raw animal foods without thorough cleaning.

Hot-food safety

Stir carefully to prevent splashing. Keep the handle away from adjacent burners and do not leave the spoon where it can fall into the pot. A wooden spoon is not a thermometer, headspace tool, bubble remover, or jar lifter.

Safe-use reminder

Follow the stirring frequency, cooking endpoint, ingredient quantities, jar size, and processing method in a current tested recipe from the National Center for Home Food Preservation, USDA, or extension services.
