How the encyclopedia works

Methodology.

The Worldwide Home Canning Encyclopedia is built as a research database first and a recipe website second. Recipes are preserved together with evidence, provenance, processing details, and review context.

Sources & trustSafety framework

Structured records

One recipe, one encyclopedia record.

Recipe structure

Ingredients, instructions, notes, and recipe presentation are normalized into a structured WP Recipe Maker record.

Encyclopedia metadata

Separate metadata stores safety status, provenance, processing parameters, source reliability, image provenance, duplicate relationships, and review notes.

Canonical records & duplicates

Deduplicate without erasing provenance.

Substantially duplicate recipes are grouped together. The strongest available source becomes the canonical reference while alternate citations and meaningful source history remain attached to the provenance trail.

Historical preservation

Original instructions stay in source context. Publication date, title, page, country or region, language, and archive link are retained where available. Safe adaptations are recorded separately.

Safety review

Classification considers source authority, formulation, method, jar size, headspace, pack style, time, pressure, gauge type, altitude, and current home-canning guidance. Missing details are not invented.

Images & provenance

Image provenance is recorded. Source photographs, public-domain historical images, licensed images, and generated illustrations are identified for what they are.

Worldwide scope

Home canning across sources, languages, and eras.

The project includes home-canning sources from around the world, including national institutions, extension services, manufacturers, books, archives, preservation organizations, blogs, and documented informal traditions. Commercial and industrial canning remain outside the recipe scope.
